Backup email accounts – Combat Cancel Culture

I already have an email address
You may have an email address, but you want two; one for your personal use and another one for creating accounts for various apps/platforms. Don’t worry it’s not going to cost you anything and it’s very simple to do.

Why two email accounts?
Keep your existing email for personal use only, you may even want to change that to a different provider, but this can be done at a later date (see the Ditch Google section for more info). As you’re going to be creating new accounts with various apps/platforms and you want to stay anonymous, you really don’t want to use the email address that can be traced back to your real name, address, phone number or IP.

Recommended providers
There’s plenty of options when it comes to email providers. Most ask for identifiable information such as telephone number or current email address, but there are a few out there where neither of these are necessary. Obviously if you’re wanting anonymity then you really don’t want to give any identifiable information over so you’ll need to find one of the providers who don’t ask for that info. Both tutamail and protonmail would be our personal recommendations.

Make sure you enable your VPN or use Tor browser before signing up to a new email account, there’s no point setting up an anonymous account and then giving them your real IP address!

What about temporary emails?
A quick search on the web can return results for “temporary email accounts”. These accounts generally stay active for approx. 10 – 20mins, they allow you to receive emails and are usually free to use. Sounds ideal for setting up a new Facebook (for example) account right? Sadly not.

These temporary emails are completely anonymous but they’re usually blacklisted by the major platforms, so if you try to create a new account using one of these, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to complete the registration process. Even if you do manage to register using one of these accounts, there’s a good chance you might be asked to verify your email account at some point in the future and you won’t be able to as these are single use accounts only. If you find yourself in a position where the only identifiable information you gave was an email address which you don’t have access to then you’re out of luck, say goodbye to all your access to that account!
