Unfortunately it’s not easy to find a true facebook alternative, it’s been going for so long and is so feature rich that it’s probably the hardest to replace. That being said there are some excellent options, some with features you won’t find on facebook…
Our top recommendation
GETTR – A relatively new kid on the block but it already has lots of positive reviews and many of the high profile voices have migrated over to this platform after being silenced on other big tech platforms. It’s not got all the features of facebook, it’s more of a cross-between of facebook and twitter. You can go live, post photos, videos, links etc. with no silly character limits as well as the standard messaging and comments features. Get it on Android and iOS.
Best of the rest
VK – The Russian equivalent to Facebook, it’s extremely similar and a number of silenced voices have headed over there for their social media fix when being kicked off Facebook. It was seen as somewhere you could speak your mind without fear of censorship but recently there have been instances of conservative voices being kicked off the platform for who they are rather than for what they’ve said. It’s worrying to see this happen but it does appear these cases are (currently) few and far between. Get it on Android / iOS.
Gab – Probably the next closest you’ll get to a full Facebook experience in terms of features and how it works. The layout is similar, you have a timeline, comments, videos, photos and you can follow people.
Unfortunately that’s where the similarities end. Gab is run by a staunch Trump fan and although anyone and everyone is welcome on the platform, it’s rare to see anything other than conservative views. The platform offers so much potential but it really does only appear to be used for news & politics. Granted, some of the posts on there can be hilarious but it’s a bit of an echo-chamber and nobody seems to use it for posting more random/personal things like you get with Facebook. Another downside is there’s no dedicated app available for it, you only access it from your browser. There are some positives for Gab though, if you want to use it for posting news/politics it seems very good. You can get some good interaction and lots of banter, there’s no censorship like you get with Facebook.
